Lemerre Demands €2-million Buyout

June 25, 2009

The Moroccan Royal Football Federation is negotiating to terminate the contract of coach Roger Lemerre, who is demanding €2-million to walk away from the job.

Morocco’s chances of winning a place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa look slim after the side could only manage a 0-0 draw with Togo in Rabat in their last qualifier, leaving them four points behind Group A leaders Gabon, who have a game in hand.

But while the Moroccan authorities are keen to see the back of Lemerre, they are unwilling to play the €2-million buy-out clause in his contract, meaning he may well remain the coach for the foreseeable future.

Morocco’s next qualifier is away in Togo on September 5, a game they have to win to have any chance of reaching a first World Cup finals since France 1998.
