His goal for Senegal against Denmark in the 2002 World Cup finals was voted the best African goal of the year. He was also third in the African Footballer of the Year poll the same year for his three goals at the tournament. Also played in the 2000 MTN Africa Cup of Nations final against Cameroon and again at the 2004 tournament in Tunisia. Highly rated player in the English league with Fulham who has attracted the attention of several high profile clubs.
Senegal’s first choice goalkeeper who had a fine season in France with his club after finally getting regular first team football prior to the tournament. He played an extraordinary 44 successive games for Senegal since 2002 before the finals in Egypt. Spent years on the bench at Monaco, with whom he won a French Ligue 1 championship winners medal in 2000. It was his third MTN Africa Cup of Nations tournament and he was also Senegal’s goalkeeper at the 2002 World Cup finals.
Camara is one of the longest-serving players in the side and played in his fourth successive MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals. Best remembered for the goals against Sweden at the 2002 World Cup finals which put Senegal into the quarter-finals. Found his club form in England during the season with surprise high-riders Wigan Athletic. Also played at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton in England and the Scottish giants Glasgow Celtic. Scored seven goals in the World Cup qualifiers.
